The research at the Institute of Biomaterial Science in Teltow is focused on innovative, polymer-based biomaterials for medical applications. Important topics are synthesis and characterization of stimuli-sensitive polymers and biomimetic materials as well as applications of biomaterials in Regenerative Medicine, especially in the cardiovascular or the musculoskeletal field. The entire chain of development of macromolecular and biomaterial science is addressed in Teltow, including the design, synthesis, processing of biomaterials, their comprehensive testing for cell tolerance and toxicity, as well as their examination of interactions with physiological environments. The translation of the results from fundamental research into clinical applications is performed especially at the Berlin-Brandenburg Centre for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT), which is a jointly operated translational research centre of Charité, Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Institute of Biomaterial Science, whose director Prof. Dr. Andreas Lendlein is also member of the directors’s board of BCRT.
